Sharon Niederman is an award winning Southwestern author, journalist and photographer living in Raton, New Mexico. She writes for numerous publications including: Raton Range, New Mexico Jewish Link, Sunset Magazine and Santa Fe New Mexican. She specializes in cuisine, travel, history, women’s issues and spirituality
Sharons first novel, Return to Abo, was released by University of New Mexico Press in February, 2005. Inspired by stories she has collected from New Mexico ranch women and rooted in two decades of writing on the history, culture, environment, art, agriculture, lifeways and cuisine of the Southwest, this novel celebrates the traditions of rural life. Return to Abo is about a small town in southeastern New Mexico that cant decide if it wants to live or die, the author says. It is a contemporary novel about three generations of women living on a small ranch who are struggling to make peace with each other and with the land. "Return to Abo" was named a 2006 Willa Award Finalist by Women Writing the West.
Niederman is the author and editor of numerous books on Southwest culture and has twice won the Border Regional Library Association’s Southwest Book Award for “literary excellence and enrichment of the cultural heritage of the Southwest.” Her résumé includes a stint as arts editor of the Santa Fe Reporter, a writer for New Mexico Heritage Preservation Alliance, and she currently works with the New Mexico Beef Council. She may be heard playing vintage country, cowboy and roots music Saturday afternoons, 2-4 pm, on L’il Sharon’s Country Cafe, KRTN-93.9 FM.
She is a member of the Society of American Travel Writers and the Silver Spur CowBelles. She is vice-president of the New Mexico Press Women and secretary of the Northeast New Mexico Council on Tourism. Her next book, NEW MEXICO'S TASTY TRADITIONS: FOLKSY STORIES, RECIPES & PHOTOS, is due out from New Mexico Magazine Press in 2010.
She is currently traveling the state writing and photographing SHRINES & SIGNS: SPIRITUAL JOURNEYS ACROSS NEW MEXICO (The Countryman Press: 2011).
